Rumensin (Monensin) poisoning in horses
Rumensin: feed additive for ruminant animals to promote growth, found in bloat capsules, some calf supplements and mineral blocks.
Monensin is a deadly toxin to horses. Less than half a gram can be fatal in an adult horse.
Horses are very susceptible to accidental exposure from calf, weaner and bull mixes or mineral licks.
Symptoms of Rumensin toxicity:
- Not Eating
- Trouble Breathing
- Diarrhoea
- Stiffness
- Muscular weakness
- Colic like symptoms eg Laying down
- Death
Immediate veterinary attention is needed if you suspect your horse has ingested Rumensin to minimise absorbtion, however treatment is generally unsuccessful. Surviving horses may be left with residual heart damage and sudden death may result from any stress or exertion weeks or months later.
Feeding Rumensin to horses or other equines may be fatal !!!!
